Recently there have been confirmed cases of Canine Influenza (Dog Flu) in NC including a dog fatality in the Raleigh area and one in Morehead City. This virus is highly contagious, easily spread and is airborne and can travel up to 20 feet. Humans can transfer it between infected and uninfected dogs. Contact with contaminated items such as bowls, leashes, crates, tables, clothing, dog runs, etc. can infect your dog. The virus lives up to 24 hours on soft surfaces, and up to 48 hours on hard surfaces. The best protection for your dog is vaccination. This requires an initial vaccine followed by a booster vaccine in 2-3 weeks, with annual boosters after that. Dogs that regularly interact with other dogs outside of their own family, and frequent places where dogs gather, are the ones most susceptible to exposure to Canine Influenza and are considered “at risk.”

From Dr. Robert Cameron at Riverside Veterinary Hospital: “We highly recommend that at risk dogs be vaccinated for Canine Influenza. This includes dogs that attend dog parks, attend dog shows or events, attend public places with the owner, get groomed, attend a boarding facility, attend doggie daycare, attend training classes or live in a home where family members work with other dogs.”
